When building Klooster Westerhûs, we paid close attention not only to the design, but also to preserving the historic farmhouse and the archaeologically valuable soil of the mound. We believe that respecting our history and surroundings is the foundation of a sustainable project.
Sustainable construction methods and materials
An important aspect of our project is the reuse of materials. By integrating existing elements into the new construction, we reduce our carbon footprint. For example, second-hand roof tiles are used on the farmhouse roof, and the parking lot was paved using the old stable floor grids from the farmhouse.
In addition, we have invested in modern technologies, such as installing 143 solar panels. This makes us completely gas-free and helps lower our energy needs. We have installed two charging stations for electric cars in the parking lot, as well as 6 boreholes for the heat pumps.
Water management
Rainwater harvesting. At Klooster Westerhûs, we have set up a smart system to collect rainwater. The water we catch from our roof is used for toilets, washing machines, and outdoor taps. This aligns with our philosophy of using natural resources sparingly.
Sustainable wastewater management. Our approach doesn't stop at construction. We purify our own wastewater using a large septic tank (IBA), which helps us further reduce our environmental impact. We consciously choose eco-friendly cleaning and hygiene products. We ask our guests to respect these principles and cooperate with our sustainability policy.

At Nijkleaster, we believe every small step counts. We encourage our guests to make sustainable choices, such as buying eco-friendly products like soap from Zeepfabriek Suver. Together, we can contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable world.
Green Churches
Nijkleaster actively participates in the Green Churches organization. Green Churches focuses on all churches and faith communities that want to actively engage in sustainability, social justice, and greening their own community. Furthermore, Green Churches is a network of faith communities that learn from each other. We try to live as greenly as possible at Klooster Westerhûs. For instance, the gardens are planted with organic flowers and shrubs, and a mix of organic grass seed featuring butterfly and bee flowers has been used,

Sustainability is an ongoing process. For example, we are currently working on developing a food garden and implementing batteries to store solar energy. And there is likely much more to come...
