Ancient Pilgrimage Routes Near Westerhûs Monastery
The Jabikspaad, one of the oldest pilgrimage routes in the Netherlands, takes you past picturesque villages, vast fields, and green meadows. As you walk, you can enjoy the peace and open space the landscape has to offer. This trail invites you to reflect on yourself, experience the world around you, and let your thoughts wander. The Sint Odulphus Trail offers another unique experience. This trail takes you to Hilaard and Jorwert and offers a lovely mix of culture and nature. Historic sites, old churches, and historic farmhouses bear witness to the region’s rich history. As you walk, you’ll feel the energy of the pilgrims who came before you, creating a sense of connection and tradition. And Nijkleaster is the stamp stop for this route.
Westerhûs Monastery is located on Odulphuspad
To get the most out of this route, we recommend using the Sint Odulphuspad app while you hike! Do you have the first or second edition of the book and are you following the trail markers? These have been positively updated for Campanarium, further enhancing the quality of the Odulphuspad. The trail has been partially rerouted for this purpose. You should now follow these junction numbers: 87-88-73-43-45-61-60-30. First, follow junction 22, then turn right in Hilaard toward junction 86 (Boksum), and continue as follows: 85-20-51-78-33-47-75-44. From Fûns onward, the route markers are used briefly as signage. Be mindful of accessibility due to bird sanctuaries. Pay attention to the signs. If necessary, find an alternative route.
You can reach “Campanarium” by train from Leeuwarden Station. Get off at Deinum Station. Once you reach Blessum, you’re on the route.

Take a good look around you along the way. You will regularly spot a church tower rising up in the wide Frisian landscape. This route has therefore been fittingly named 'Campanarium', which roughly translates to bell tower.

How God Disappeared from Jorwerd
The route passes through Jorwert (in Frisian). Geert Mak moved to this Frisian village and described the historical transformation whose scale and consequences are only now becoming clear. It is the story of farmers and money, of small shopkeepers and the encroaching city, of the church tower that collapsed and newcomers who no longer greeted locals, of nature returning while simultaneously disappearing. It is the story of the years when everything changed. What happened to the countryside when machines arrived, along with subsidies and banks, and when traditional farmers slowly went under?
Nijkleaster as a checkpoint
Remarkable! A farmhouse located one kilometer from Jorwert has been renovated into a Protestant Christian monastery—or, as they say in Frisian, a “Nijkleaster.” The site has a rich history. Centuries ago, a convent stood here. The monastery has permanent residents, guest rooms, a chapel of silence, and a monastery garden. There is also a “kleastergang” for reflection and connection. Nestled in the heart of the Frisian countryside, it is the ideal location for a monastery. The silence and the experience of the landscape truly come into their own here. “Nijkleaster” is an “open monastery” with an ecumenical mission and, as such, aims to offer hospitality to people from various churches and traditions, as well as to every pilgrim, regardless of their worldview. The Nijkleaster community offers hospitality so that, during a weekend or week-long retreat, you can participate in a set monastic rhythm of prayer and work, stillness and walking, fellowship and enjoyment (see link below). When you’re standing on the first footbridge from the hamlet of Funs (junction 30), turn a quarter turn to the right. You’ll see the “Nijkleaster” farm. Hikers from Campanarium (13) can pick up a stamp at the monastery.

Pilgrims are always welcome at the monastery, where you can stay overnight and take time to reflect on your journey. If the monastery is full, we are happy to help you find alternative accommodation nearby.
Inside the monastery itself, you will find a detailed map with interesting walking routes that invite you to explore the beauty of the surrounding area. These routes lead to nearby villages such as Bears, Jorwert, Mantgum, and Boksum, each with its own charm and unique character.
Bears, with its characteristic Frisian farmhouses and rural atmosphere, offers a serene setting to enjoy a short break. Here you can sit down, take in your surroundings, and reflect on your journey.
Jorwert, famous for its impressive church, the book by Geert Mak, and the hospitality of the locals, invites you to take a look around the village and perhaps strike up a conversation with the people who live here. Their stories bring history to life and make your walk even more meaningful. There is a pilgrim refugio in the church of Jorwert, or you can walk a little further to Klooster Westerhûs for an overnight stay. There is space for pilgrims, and if not, we will help you find a place to sleep.
Mantgum offers wonderful views over the surrounding fields and is a perfect spot for a picnic. While enjoying your lunch, you can appreciate the fresh air and peaceful rural life.
Boksum, with its rich history and cozy atmosphere, marks the end of your exploration through the region. Here you will find beautiful historic buildings and a warm welcome from the residents.
Pilgrims and Nijkleaster
Both the St. Odulphus Trail and the St. Jabik Trail pass through Jorwert. Not far from there lies Nijkleaster—Klooster Westerhûs. You’re warmly welcome to stay the night and join us for a celebration. From Monday, October 19, through Friday, October 23, 2026, we’re organizing a midweek event centered around the pilgrim’s staff. In days gone by, pilgrims were given a pilgrim’s staff upon setting out for a holy destination. It served as a walking aid, to ward off dangerous animals, and above all as a faithful traveling companion. Will you join us on the journey?
