This week's Work of Mercy: "Clothing the naked". From the new Kleaster Sound, which comes online today, the following words for reflection, culminating in two questions.
In this work of "warmth," clothing the naked, I think first of clothes. Clothes to literally be able to put on. Notions of warmth and protection come to mind. But also shame and hiding that shame. Without clothes, we are indeed naked, vulnerable, we have nothing to hide. And so clothes are important.
Jesus is a bit short with his words from the Sermon on the Mount: 'Do not worry about yourself and what you will eat or drink, nor about your body and what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?"
I dare not say that to people who are naked and poor. Because then those clothes do matter. Shame and vulnerability intervene in a human life. When people are naked then they need to be clothed. When we ourselves are naked, then we are grateful for any help that offers protection and covers our shame.
Jesus is talking about something else, I think. He is going against a morality that always focuses on the outside: the food, clothes, possessions and merit. Focus first on what is really important in your life, the rest will follow naturally. Live from the inside, take care of your soul, focus on the kingdom of God.
Two questions for reflection. One that looks more outward and one the is more about yourself. When it comes to "dressing the naked," who do you think about. And how do you do that?
And as a second question, "how important are clothes to you? What is your favorite piece of clothing that you definitely don't want or can't live without?
