Yesterday morning, May 12, Nijkleaster again began its weekly kleaster morning. A festive moment! The Kleaster sound will remain, but will appear less frequently and less regularly. Each time Hinne Wagenaar or Saskia Leene accompany the kleaster morning, they make a corresponding Kleaster sound.
Today's Kleaster sound is centered on Ascension. The Gospel of Luke tells about it, "While Jesus was blessing them, he went away from them" (Luke 24:51). A few words about that Bible text plus a question:
Saying goodbye is a big deal. Someone you love, something you hold dear, a stage of life - it takes time to say goodbye properly. And that goodbye always changes tone along the way. At Jesus' ascension, which we just read about, the process of saying goodbye, of mourning, has been going on for some time. After his death and after the comforting apparitions in which Jesus feels very close, now is the time to make space, space for a new life after parting. Jesus takes his disciples to Bethany, the place where they experienced so much hospitality and friendship together. And as Jesus blesses them, he goes away from them.
A question to muse over: As you reflect on moments of parting in your own life, can you recognize in them something of blessing in addition to pain?
