Yesterday morning, May 12, Nijkleaster resumed its weekly morning gathering. A festive moment! The Kleaster-klank will continue, but will appear less frequently and less regularly. Whenever Hinne Wagenaar or Saskia Leene lead the morning gathering, they create a corresponding Kleaster-klank.

Today's Kleaster-klank focuses on Ascension Day. The Gospel of Luke tells us about this: 'While he blessed them, he parted from them' (Luke 24:51). A few thoughts on that Bible passage and a question:

Saying goodbye is tough. Someone you love, something dear to you, a phase in life – it takes time to say goodbye properly. And that farewell constantly changes tone along the way. At Jesus' ascension, which we just read about, the process of farewell and grief has been underway for a while. After his death and the comforting appearances in which Jesus feels very close, the time has come to make room for a new life after the farewell. Jesus takes his disciples to Bethany, the place where they experienced so much hospitality and friendship together. And as Jesus blesses them, he departs from them.

A question to ponder: When you reflect on moments of farewell in your own life, can you recognize something of a blessing alongside the pain?
